Ashwagandha

Ashwagandha, scientifically known as Withania somnifera, is a medicinal herb traditionally used in the ancient system of medicine from India.  It is believed to promote physical and mental health, rejuvenate the body, and increase longevity.

Ashwagandha contains several bioactive compounds which contribute to its desired properties:

  • Anti-inflammatory by its withanolide compounds

  • Neuroprotective such as in Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s

  • Immunomodulatory

  • Cardioprotective

  • Anti-diabetic

  • Adaptogenic - helps the body adapt to stress, support energy levels, and promote overall well-being

  • Antimicrobial effects

  • Supports sleep (as hinted by its name somnifera)

  • May promote hormone balance in men and women

So now we know what all the hype is about not to mention it’s got a cool name.  But, should everyone be taking it?

It is pretty safe for human use with some exceptions.  It can cause mild and transient adverse effects such as sleepiness, epigastric discomfort, and loose stools.  But, lets talk about who should probably avoid it all together.

  1. Patients with pre-existing liver disease - there are case reports of Ashwagandha-induced liver injury.

  2. Individuals taking hepatotoxic medications.

  3. Pregnant and breastfeeding women - because we just don’t know enough yet.

  4. Patients with autoimmune diseases - can see flares of conditions such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and multiple sclerosis.

  5. Individuals with thyroid disorders as it may affect thyroid hormone levels.

  6. Hypersensitivity to Ashwagandha - I think that goes without saying.

So now if you and your doctor at Rooted Health (aka Me:) have determined if it’s right for you, how do you take it?

  • Powder: mixed with warm milk, ghee, or honey or just add to your favorite health smoothie.

  • Capsules/Tablets: easy and convenient for daily dosing.

  • Tinctures: fast-absorbing and good for precise dosing.

  • Gummies and Functional Foods: found in many wellness products.

Recommended Dose:

300-600 mg of high concentration root extract

When to Take It:

  • Morning: for energy and focus throughout the day

  • Evening: to wind down and support sleep.

So for best results, take 1/2 your dose in the morning and 1/2 in the evening.

Cycle It or Take Breaks?

Many herbalists suggest

  • 8-12 weeks on, then

  • 2-4 weeks off
